Music Theory - Where and when can I take an exam?

Trinity College London offers Music Theory exams worldwide at Grades 1 to 8 and diploma levels (AMusTCL and LMusTCL). Depending on your location, exams may be available in paper-based or digital formats.


This article explains how to find out when and where exams take place, and how to access local booking information.


Exam Formats and Availability


Music Theory exams are available in two formats, though not all options are offered in every region:


  • Paper-based exams: Written exams held on fixed dates each year at public centres or registered venues.
  • Digital theory exams: On demand online theory exams available in the following countries:


Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, UAE, 

United Kingdom


Availability depends on the delivery model offered in your location. To check what’s available, use the Exam Centre search tool or contact your local Trinity representative.


Paper-based Theory Exam Dates


In most countries, Music Theory exams are offered several times per year. Entry must be made in advance.


Important:


  • Late entries may incur a penalty fee or be refused.
  • Closing dates are typically 4–6 weeks before the exam.


UK & Ireland notice:


No paper-based Theory of Music Graded exams will be available in the UK & Ireland after May 2025, Paper-based Diploma exams continue to be available. From that point onward, Music Theory exams will be delivered in digital format only.

Booking Deadlines


Deadlines vary by country and session. They are normally published on your local Trinity website or visible during the online booking process. Book early if you require access arrangements, as approval must be granted in advance.


Private Sessions


Schools or organisations may apply to run private Music Theory exam sessions if minimum entry numbers are met. This can be a useful option when entering groups of candidates.
