Trinity College London offers Music Theory exams in two formats: face-to-face (outside the UK) and digital (available in the UK and internationally). Both formats assess theoretical understanding and knowledge as outlined in the current Theory of Music syllabus. Face-to-Face Theory Exams

Face-to-face theory exams are paper-based and delivered at Trinity centres outside the UK and Ireland.

  • Availability: Internationally only (not offered in the UK)

  • Duration:

    • Grade 1: 1 hour

    • Grades 2–4: 1 hour 30 minutes

Digital Theory Exams

Digital theory exams are available for Grades 1–5 and can be taken online from home or school. They use an interactive multiple-choice format.

  • Levels available: Grades 1–5

  • Availability: Available year-round

  • Access: Exam access codes are valid for 28 days from issue

  • Duration:

    • Grades 1–2: 1 hour

    • Grades 3–4: 1 hour 30 minutes

    • Grade 5: 2 hours

  • Rebooking: If the exam is not completed within 28 days, it must be rebooked and paid for again
