Trinity College London offers written Music Theory exams from Grades 1 to 8. These exams assess a candidate’s understanding of the elements of music through progressive, structured content aligned with Trinity’s published syllabus.

Exam Content and Structure
Trinity’s Music Theory exams are designed to test knowledge and application of key musical concepts including notation, harmony, rhythm, form, and terminology. The topics assessed vary by grade and are outlined in the Music Theory Syllabus, which is the definitive source for all requirements.
Each grade exam includes:
- A written paper, completed under timed conditions
- A series of short-answer and extended questions, including staff notation tasks
- Progressive increase in complexity from Grade 1 (basic notation and rhythm) to Grade 8 (advanced harmony, analysis, and compositional techniques)
How Exams Are Delivered
Music Theory exams are available in paper-based and digital formats (selected regions only). Availability may differ by country or centre.
Paper Exams: In In-person exams, held on set dates throughout the year at approved public centres or schools. Selected countries only, from May 2025, this Grade exam format is not used in the UK and Ireland, and is only available in selected locations.
Digital Exams: (Computer-based): Available in selected countries via our online platform. Digital Theory of Music exams are available in:

Entry Requirements
There are no prerequisites for entering any Music Theory grade. Candidates may enter any level directly, including Grade 8, without needing to have taken lower grades.
However, it is recommended that learners build a solid foundation by working progressively through the grades where possible.

To prepare for a Music Theory exam, candidates and teachers can use:

- Theory workbooks published by Trinity College London Press
- Online practice resources, available via the Trinity Music Resources Hub
Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Access Arrangements
Candidates with learning differences, disabilities, or health conditions may be eligible for access arrangements or modified exam materials (such as enlarged print or extra time).
