Trinity’s Music Theory syllabus supports musical understanding and progress for learners of all ages and levels. Theory exams are available from Grade 1 to Grade 8, with two advanced diploma levels: AMusTCL and LMusTCL.
These qualifications build core music literacy, analytical skills, and historical knowledge — enhancing both performance studies and broader musicianship.
Two exam formats: Digital and Paper-based
Music Theory exams are available in two formats:
Digital exams – Available on demand in many countries, including the UK and Ireland (see note below). These are taken online using the innovative MusicGurus platform, and use an intuitive music notation interface. Results are typically issued within two weeks.
Paper-based exams – Offered on set dates throughout the year at registered exam centres in selected countries. These follow the same syllabus and question types as the digital version.
Please note: From May 2025, paper-based Grades 1–8 will no longer be available in the UK and Ireland. All Theory exams in these regions will be digital-only.
What Trinity Music Theory exams assess
Each grade builds essential skills in reading and writing Western classical notation, covering:
Rhythm, pulse and time signatures
Melody and pitch
Harmony, cadences, and chord identification
Transposition, score reading and form
Historical context and instrumental/vocal knowledge
Trinity’s syllabus and workbooks support step-by-step learning, with clear explanations, worked examples, and progressive difficulty across the grades.
How theory supports musical progress
There is no formal theory requirement for taking Trinity’s practical music exams, but many learners use theory to:
Deepen their understanding of notation and musical structure
Build confidence in their instrument or voice
Prepare for higher-grade performance exams
Support GCSE, A-level, IB, and university music study
Trinity’s Grade 5 Theory (or above) is also accepted as a prerequisite for Practical Grades 6–8 by other awarding bodies that require one.
Theory Diploma levels
Trinity offers two higher-level theory diplomas:
AMusTCL (Associate) – broadly equivalent to the first year of undergraduate study
LMusTCL (Licentiate) – broadly equivalent to the final year of undergraduate study
These qualifications explore advanced harmony, analysis, historical context, and set works. They are taken as written exams and are available at selected sessions worldwide.
