Trinity’s music qualifications are open to all learners, regardless of age or prior experience. This article outlines what candidates need to know before entering for a graded or diploma-level music exam.
Grade exams - Initial, Grades 1-8 and Music Certificate exams.
- There are no minimum or maximum age limits for any of Trinity’s Graded Classical & Jazz, Rock and Pop, or Music Certificate exams.
- Candidates can enter at any grade without needing to complete previous ones (e.g. you may start at Grade 5 if it suits your skill level).
- Candidates at Grades 6-8 do not need Theory of Music qualifications to enter.
- Trinity also offers an Initial Grade exam, which sits below Grade 1 and is designed as an accessible introduction to graded assessments.
Performance Diploma-Level Entry (ATCL, LTCL, FTCL)
- Trinity’s music performance diplomas are open to all learners, and there are no age restrictions.
- Trinity’s ATCL and LTCL performance diplomas do not have formal prerequisites.
- Candidates wishing to enter for the FTCL Diploma must first gain the LTCL Diploma, or equivalent level qualification, in the same instrument/voice.
- ATCL and LTCL Performance Diplomas are also offered as a Digital exam.
- The FTCL Diploma must be taken in person, at one of our FTCL exam centres.
ATCL (Associate) – equivalent in standard to the first year recital of an undergraduate degree.
LTCL (Licentiate) – equivalent in standard to the final year recital of an undergraduate degree.
FTCL (Fellowship) – equivalent in standard to a postgraduate recital at a conservatoire or university.
