We understand that not passing an exam can feel disheartening. However, it’s important to remember that musical progress is rarely linear—and setbacks are often part of the journey. Every musician develops at their own pace, and a failed exam does not reflect a lack of potential or talent. Instead, it offers an opportunity to identify areas for growth and build towards success in the future.
Many candidates who don’t pass the first time go on to re-take their exam with renewed confidence and improved performance. In some cases, candidates may even choose to progress to the next grade when they feel ready—carrying forward what they’ve learned to meet a new challenge with fresh energy.
When can I re-take my exam?
Face-to-Face Exams
The same grade or level can only be taken once per exam period (term). If you do not pass, you will need to wait until the next available term to re-enter for that qualification.
Digital Exams
Digital grades and diplomas offer more flexibility. You may submit a new entry whenever you feel ready—there is no limit to how soon you can re-enter.
Please note: a new video recording must be made for each submission. Reusing a previously submitted performance is not permitted, and any result based on a re-used video may be invalidated.
Using your existing diploma programme
If you are working towards a diploma and had your programme approved during a previous attempt, you may continue using it for up to two years from the approval date. If your re-take is within this period, you do not need to resubmit your programme approval.

Understanding your result
Your marksheet offers detailed feedback and is the best place to start when reviewing your performance. If you are working with a teacher or tutor, we recommend discussing the feedback with them for guidance.
If you believe there may have been an issue with the marking or result, you may request a Results Review—Trinity’s formal post-results enquiry process. This focuses on the accuracy of the original result. A charge usually applies and the review is only taken forward where sufficient grounds have been demonstrated. Please note that a Results Review does not involve a new assessment. If you wish to re-take the exam, you will need to make a new entry and pay the standard exam fee.
