Receiving Your Feedback
Trinity provides a detailed mark form or feedback report with every exam result. This includes:
A breakdown of marks awarded for each section
Written comments highlighting strengths and areas for improvement
Recommendations to support future progress
For Diploma exams, feedback includes comments on:
Recital performance
Programme construction and planning (ATCL/LTCL)
Musical interpretation, technical command, and stagecraft
These comments are designed to support your musical development at each stage of your journey.
How Trinity Music Exams Are Scored
Trinity music exams are assessed by trained examiners using published criteria that reflect the performance skills and musical understanding expected at each grade or diploma level.
Graded Exams (Initial–Grade 8)
Each graded music exam is marked out of 100, with the following attainment bands:
Pass: 60–74 marks
Merit: 75–86 marks
Distinction: 87–100 marks
Different components of the exam (e.g. performance, technical work, supporting tests) carry specific weightings depending on the subject and grade.
Music Performance Diplomas
ATCL and LTCL diplomas are marked out of 100:
Pass: 60–79 marks
Distinction: 80–100 marks
FTCL diplomas are assessed on a pass/fail basis only. Candidates are awarded either Approved or Not Approved, and no numerical score is issued.
Certificates
Digital certificates are emailed after results are released. In some cases, they may arrive before the mark form, which is sent separately. Your Digital Certificate email will also contain a link to order a paper copy, should you wish to receive one.
Certificates reflect the level and outcome of the exam (e.g. “Distinction” for Grade 7 Piano).
Successful diploma candidates are entitled to use the appropriate post-nominal letters (e.g. ATCL, LTCL) following their name.
