What does BETA testing mean for the Diagnostic tool?
BETA testing means the Diagnostic tool is an early release version available to a limited group of teachers and students. During this phase, you can explore all core features, and we will continue to refine the experience based on your feedback.
How do I access the Diagnostic tool?
To access the Diagnostic tool, you must have a NoteLab English account. If you have an account, please select the Diagnostic tool from the left-hand menu. If you do not yet have a NoteLab English account, please sign up here.
How do I create a new class in the Diagnostic tool?
- Log into NoteLab and then open the Diagnostic tool.
- Select New Class.
- A pop-up box will appear where you can type in Class title (required) and select a Class level (optional)
- Click Add.
How can I add students to a class in the Diagnostic tool?
Once a class has been created in your Diagnostic tool Dashboard, you can add students either individually or in bulk. Full guidance can be found in the Guide.
When uploading my class list, I receive the error message: “We couldn’t process the file. Please upload a CSV format and try again.” How can I resolve this?
This error means the file you uploaded is not in the required CSV format. To fix this:
- Download the List Template (see Guide)
- Enter your student data
- Save the file as a CSV
- Re-upload the file
Why am I seeing the error message “Student list upload failed.” when I try to upload my class list?
This error indicates that the file could not be processed due to an internal error or connectivity issue. Check your internet connection first to make sure there are no network issues. Wait a few moments and try again.
If the issue persists, please raise a ticket and a member of the team will be in touch to address your query.
I received the following error message when uploading my class list: “Upload Failed. Your list contains duplicate student names. Please edit and try again.” What should I do?
The system cannot process identical first and/or last names. To fix this, change the duplicate entries before uploading. For example, add a number or an extra letter to one of the names.
What does the error message “Upload failed. Some student names already exist in your list. Please edit and try again.” mean?
This means one or more of the student names you’re uploading already appear in your class list.
- If it is the same student, delete the duplicate entry.
- If it is two different students with the same name, edit the names (e.g. add a number or an extra letter) before uploading.
How do I create and share key codes with my students?
When you add a student to a class, their key code is automatically generated and will appear in the Diagnostic tool dashboard, ready for you to copy and share with the student.
If you need to create a new key code, (e.g. if the student has already taken the test), tick the box next to their name and select Generate new codes, and the code will update automatically.
You can then copy and share the code with the parent or student via email or another messaging service.
Note: Please note that NoteLab does not automatically send key codes to students – this should be shared by the teacher to the students directly.
How do I print a code?
- Click on the student(s) name.
- Select Print Code. A PDF will download to your device.
- Locate the file in your Downloads folder, or wherever it has been saved.
- Open the file, which will contain: student name, key code, URL and QR code (which links directly to the test page).
- Select the Print icon or press Ctrl+P to print.
What do I do if a key code is not working?
- Double-check for typing errors (this is the most common cause).
- Make sure the student has not already completed a test with this key code (key codes are invalid once a test is completed using that code).
- If the code still doesn’t work, generate a new one (see FAQ: How do I create and share key codes with my students?).
Note: In most cases, if a key code is not working, generating a new code will resolve the issue. Always try this first before seeking any further support.
A parent did not receive the key code. What next?
Key codes are not automatically sent to parents/students. It is the teacher’s responsibility to share them. If a parent has not received the key code, copy and send it again via email or print to share on paper.
If I generate a new code, what happens to the old code?
Both the old and new key codes will remain valid unless the original key code has expired. Remember: A key code only expires once the student has completed each element of the test.
While both key codes are active, only the most recent one appears on the Diagnostic tool dashboard.
How do I change the class that my student is in?
Select the Edit icon next to the student’s name. A pop-up will appear. Click the Class drop down menu, select the new class name, and save your changes.
Can I move a student’s record to another teacher’s NoteLab account?
Unfortunately, this is not currently possible.
How many tests can I do per student?
The number of tests a student can take is unlimited for BETA.
How can I check if a student has successfully logged in and started the test?
Teachers cannot monitor logins or test progress in real time. However, the system will show when a test has been completed, at which point the status will change to Complete.
The student’s microphone or audio isn’t working. How can I help?
- Ask the student to check their device settings to ensure the microphone/audio are enabled (see Guide).
- If prompted, the student should allow microphone access in the browser.
- For best performance, use a device less than five years old.
- If the issue persists, advise the student to try a different device.
What are the minimum requirements to take the test?
NoteLab should work on any device, as long as the browser is the latest version. There are no specific technical requirements.
Can I use a tablet and a laptop?
The Diagnostic tool Dashboard for teachers is best viewed and used on a laptop but is also optimised for tablets, if needed. The Diagnostic Test for students is optimised for phones or tablets but can be taken on a laptop with a microphone.
Where can I view the results of my students?
In the Diagnostic tool Dashboard, open the applicable class, then click on the student’s name to open the Results page. Here you can view all tests the student has completed.
Note: Only teachers can view results. It is the teacher’s responsibility to communicate these results to students and place them appropriately.
What if I disagree with a result?
AI is prone to ‘hallucinations’ and may give inaccurate results from time to time. The aim is to avoid these as much as possible however it cannot always be guaranteed. If you disagree with a result, it is recommended you generate a new key code, and the student takes the test again.
Is any personal data being shared with AI companies?
No personal information or data is being shared with any AI large language models (LLMs). Audio transcriptions of speaking during the test are only processed, and no personal data is included in this.
